Although it had been a decades-long dream to write stories for children, it wasn't until she retired from teaching that Gerrie Porcella Linek felt the time was right. She was convinced to go for it when she came across the John Burroughs quotation: "Leap and the net will appear!" Tum Tortoise Rights Himself is Gerrie's first book, and the final result of that leap.
Throughout the pandemic year of 2020, extending into 2021, everything seemed unfamiliar, confusing, and challenging. Gerrie regained a sense of normalcy through taking online courses and workshops in writing, self-publishing and marketing children's books. Whenever she felt like giving up, she thought of Tum. If she quit, she would be ending not only Tum's story, but also the unfolding of her own. In that moment she knew she had to press on.
As the story begins, we see that Tum is a good student. As it progresses we discover that he is also a good teacher, because he is excited to share what he has learned, and in his excitement and confidence he empowers his friends. With each challenge they persevere and gain a victory. And, with each challenge they will inevitably become a bit stronger and better equipped to face the next one.
The simple mantra Tum's mother shared with him gave him the strength to keep going whenever he felt like quitting. Gerrie hopes that Tum's story will inspire children and adults alike to follow their dreams. Whatever your age, it's never too early OR too late to begin!
Believe in yourself. Try very hard. NEVER give up!
